10 Core Sports Commonwealth Games
A multi-sport event which involves athletes from all the Commonwealth Nations has been taking place since 1930 except for 1942 and 1946 when it was cancelled due to World War-II.
Commonwealth Games Federation oversees the sporting event which involves a range of sporting events. These games have 10 core sports about which we will talk below.
10. Weight Lifting
One of the core sports events in the games, Weight Lifting has been a part of the competition since 1950. Sixteen gold medals for men and women are on offer in different events in this sport.
Swimming has been a part of Commonwealth Games since 1930. Events for men and women in Swimming include 50m, 100m and 200 m in Butterfly, Breaststroke, Freestyle and Backstroke categories.
Squash was included in Commonwealth games in the year 1998. The sporting event has five gold in both single and double category for men and women.
7. Rugby 7S
The sport was included in Commonwealth Games in 1998 and one gold medal is on offer for Men in this game.
Netball was played for the first time in Commonwealth Games in 1998 and has been a part of the games ever since. Incidentally, this is the only all women’s game in Commonwealth.
5. Lawn Bowls
Lwan Bowls has been in Commonwealth Games since 1930 and six gold medals are on offer in this game. The game is played in singles, pairs and triples.
Hockey which is otherwise a popular sporting event was included in Commonwealth Games in the year 1998 and has been a part of the sporting competition, ever since. Rules of International Hockey Federation apply in this sporting event in Commonwealth Games.
Boxing is another core event of Commonwealth Games which has been since the inception of games. Until 2014, Boxing was for men only but now women’s boxing too has been introduced in Commonwealth Games.
Badminton has been a part of Commonwealth Games since 1966. Six gold medals are on offer in this event in the Commonwealth Games. Mixed team and doubles event is also played in Badminton in this championship.
This is another popular core sporting event in Commonwealth Games and has been part of every variant of this championship since its beginning in 1930. Track and Field events in Athletics have been categorized into jumping, throwing and running in this event.
